I'm hoping a PDE proponent will weigh in with better answers than I have. Doubts about T/W seem quite reasonable. It is hard to see how a chamber with a few percent duty cycle can match T/W with a full time engine.

In looking at this idea, I can't help but flash back to the novel "King David's Spaceship", by Jerry Pournelle, in which an astronaut ascends to orbit using what amounts to a really big machine gun.

Other than doubts as to the T/W you could get from this design, I don't know what else to say.
